Hello Prospective Corps Members (PCM) getting ready for NYSC camp, Before we dive into the NYSC Camp guide where we explain everything about the NYSC Orientation Camp and how you can survive, Let me give you a quick overview of the background history of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Background History of NYSC in Nigeria

Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970)
Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970)

Following the Nigerian Civil War between the year 1967 to 1970, the NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) was founded to resolve the grave divisions among tribes and regions in Nigeria, generated by the fighting. Its goal is to restore and promote national unity by deploying graduates throughout Nigeria to live and work with diverse groups.

The programme, which is open to all Nigerian graduates with at least a third-class division, has received both praise and criticism. Supporters say it promotes national unity and understanding, while detractors say it’s a waste of time and resources that could exacerbate differences.

Despite the disputes, the NYSC serves an important role in establishing understanding and promoting tolerance among various ethnic and religious groupings among Nigerian youngsters.

Registration and Mobilization

The registration and mobilization process is the initial step in the PCM’s journey. It entails registering on the NYSC portal and providing the essential information about your certification as a graduate, before you can be able to register on the NYSC portal, your school has to upload basic information about you and your certification as a graduate e.g your full name, gender, course of study, what you graduate with, your school of graduation, etc, after the uploading, you can then visit any accredited NYSC cafe around you to complete your registration, that is where you do your thumb printing, upload your picture etc. after this is completed, then NYSC mobilisation begins, The NYSC mobilization list is a comprehensive database of graduates eligible for national service (NYSC, 2023).

Following successful registration, PCMs are mandated to participate in a 3-week orientation program in a camp located in a state different from their state of origin or study. The orientation phase is designed to equip PCMs with the physical, mental, and social skills needed for the service year.

The NYSC scheme, through this program, promote cultural exchange and unity by allowing graduates to experience life outside their geo-political zones as stated in Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1993.
